I am a 40 year old stay-at-home mom of 2 kids. I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes about 9 or 10 years ago. My mother had already been diagnosed a few years prior and she had been urging me to get tested. I guess I wasn’t too surprised at the diagnosis because I have been overweight nearly my entire life. I ate poorly (lots of junk food) and did little exercise.
But because I felt more or less okay, I never took diabetes seriously. I would sometimes stay in control for a short while but then would fall my plan and would pretend I didn’t even have the disease. During this time I got pregnant two times. Both pregnancies went fine, although I did have moments of very high readings. Today my son is 7 and my daughter is 4.
In December 2008 I turned 40. I also finally got myself back to see my endocrinologist. I found out that my A1c was 11.2! Which means my average blood sugar was in the high 200s/low 300s. Terrible! And I had been taking 75/25 Humalog insulin for some time. When I saw the endo, he put me on Glucovance 500/5 2x a day, along with the insulin. I’m also trying to limit my carbs to 30g per meal and exercise by walking on my treadmill at least 5x a week.
I’ve decided to keep a blog so that I can record my thoughts and experiences. I hope this will keep me committed to following a healthy lifestyle.
